Knotch Launches Their iOS App Today
StartX Summer session grads Knotch
launch their iOS app today. Knotch is a people-first opinion sharing
platform that cuts out the typical white noise associated with social
media by letting users express their opinion on a topic by simply
tagging it with a color. When users’ opinions are aggregated, their
knotches blend into a color bar that expresses mass sentiment on a
particular topic.

This is big for social business because Knotch represents a blend between simplicity and nuance. Colors express a range of opinion and the ability to choose one rapidly means users can express their measured opinion on numerous topics with just the touch of a button.
Think about it. In the time it takes you to tap out a thought in 140 characters or less, you could probably Knotch four or five topics. That’s a major step forward for social business and a great way for users to form a community based around shared sentiment- which is exactly what has been happening in the private beta. “Individual users create an identity with their colors as every Knotch you’ve added is aggregated on a colored bar that shows up on your profile,” said cofounder Anda Gansca, “so users can filter through the colors on the bar to discover old friends and new via their color-coded shared sentiments.”
One of the coolest features that Knotch has added since the private beta is their “ask-a-friend” button. For every topic that’s knotchable (yes that just became a word), users can ask their followers on Knotch to quickly add their own thoughts. If your friends are behind the times and don’t have Knotch, then there’s an option to send them a text and invite them to join the network and give their opinion on that topic.
Knotch is fully integrated with Facebook and users can choose whether or not they want to post their Knotches to the social network. Don’t have the time to tap out a response to a friend’s dissertation on the President vetoing the Keystone XL pipeline? No problem- just hit them up with a Knotch letting them know how you feel.
Knotch hopes to make major inroads into the male demographic with the launch of the public beta. “We’ve had immense success with younger females in the private beta,” said Anda, “but we’re really trying to reach out to men as well.”

On the business side, Knotch is going to be huge with big data consumers. Because Knotch can aggregate nuanced opinions so rapidly, businesses can get the access to the consumer data they crave without having to go through the hassle of using sentiment sifting programs or running internal marketing campaigns. They’ll have to pay to get access to the demographic deets however and Knotch is pursuing a B2B model that will provide subscribers with detailed social analytics.
Knotch was incubated at StartX and Anda credited the incubator with helping them grow into the company they are today, “without StartX, we wouldn’t be who we are today- they really accelerated our growth and they’ve been incredibly valuable in helping us develop all aspects of the company.” Anda also had kind words for her cofounder Stephanie Volftson, saying “Steph is a genius - she went from not knowing how to create an iPhone app to having built a fully functional app in a week! And in general, she is my professional soulmate because we complete each other to perfection :)."
